35 protected buildings and structures across Galway to benefit from Built Heritage Jobs Leverage Scheme for 2014

Kylemore Abbey ChurchThirty-five protected buildings and structures across Galway City and County are to benefit from the Department of Arts, Heritage & Gaeltacht’s new ‘Built Heritage Jobs Leverage Scheme’.

The funding for Galway is €225,000 which will be used to carry out important conservation works at protected buildings and structures across the city and county. The Scheme will support significant employment in the conservation and construction industries as well as specialist craft-industries.

Nationally, over 618 protected building and structures are included in the €5 million scheme which has also attracted some €16 million in private investment along the Government contribution.

Commented Galway West Fine Gael TD and Chairman of the Fine Gael Committee on Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Seán Kyne: “The Built Heritage Scheme will provide much-needed funding for the repair and conversation works on a considerable number of important buildings and structures across our city and county.

“Playing a very significant part of our landscape, many of the buildings and structures are readily associated with Galway and are used by community groups, organisations, businesses as well as serving as residences.

“Among the structures to benefit from funding in Galway city are McCambridges on Shop Street, 17th century buildings by Spanish Arch and the thatched cottage on Shantalla Road, while in the county the house and church at Kylemore Abbey, Oranmore Castle, and Clareville House in Oughterard are among twenty-five beneficiaries.

“The Built Heritage Scheme has also been strongly supported by our City and County councils who sought and assessed applications before submitting them for final approval to the Minister.

“The Scheme is a very welcome initiative and not only provides for the conservation of some of Galway’s most important heritage buildings but also boosts employment and tourism,” concluded Deputy Kyne.
