Athcheapachán an Choimisinéara Teanga – Reappointment of Language Commissioner

Ag cruinniú de na hairí ar an gCeadaoin, mhol mé go n-ainmneoidh an tUachtarán an tUasal Rónán Ó Domhnaill le haghaidh athcheapacháin do théarma sé-bliana eile.

Bunaíodh Oifig Chomisinéir na dTeangacha Oifigiúla faoi Alt 20 d’Acht na dTeangacha Oifigiúla 2003. Go bunúsach, is é ról na hoifige ná faireachán agus monatóireacht a dhéanamh ar an Acht agus a chinntiú go gcuirtear an tAcht i bhfeidhm. Tá an Coimisinéir neamhspleách i gcomhlíonadh a chuid feidhmeanna. Tá an t-údarás aige gearáin a fhiosrú agus moltaí a dhéanamh le comhlacht poiblí i gcás nach raibh dualgais faoi Acht na dTeangacha Oifigiúla nó aon reachtaíocht Gaeilge eile comhlíonta.

Ceapadh an tUasal Ó Domhnaill mar Choimisinéir Teanga i Márta 2014. Tá a oifig lonnaithe ar an Spidéal, Co. na Gaillimhe. Beidh a théarma sé-bliana istigh i Márta 2020. I mo thuairim, tá a chuid dualgas go dtí seo comhlíonta ag an Uasal Ó Domhnaill ar bhealach proifisiúnta inniúil.

Re-Appointment of Language Commissioner Recommended

At the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday I recommended the re-appointment of the Coimisinéir Teanga, Mr Rónán Ó Domhnaill, for a second term. Located in An Spidéal, County Galway, the Office of the Language Commissioner was created by the Official Languages Act (2003) with the purpose of supervising and monitoring the implementation of the legislation.

Effectively the Ombudsman for the Irish Language, the Coimisinéir Teanga is appointed by the President on the advice of the Government and following a resolution of both the Dáil and the Seanad.

I believe that Mr. Ó Domhnaill has carried out his duties, which are independent of the Department of Culture, Heritage and Gaeltacht and the Government, in a professional and expert way. He has investigated complaints, identified shortcomings and put forward recommendations to rectify problems. By commencing the re-appointment process, and pending the passing of a resolution in both Houses of the Oireachtas, it is hoped that the Coimisinéir can continue to fulfil his important duties without interruption.
