Balancing payments for farmers in Galway and Mayo under the 2014 Single Farm Payment Scheme will begin on 1st December. The payments totalling €35.99 million in Galway and €26.6 million in Mayo will benefit 10,906 farmers in Galway and 10,286 in Mayo.
These payments are an essential part of many farmers’ budgets. Farmers in Galway and Mayo will receive payments next week.
Nationally the payments are worth in excess of €550 million, bringing the total value of payments made to date under the 20114 SPF scheme to over €1.1 billion, while payments under the Disadvantaged Areas Scheme now exceeds €185 million.
Payments such as these are essential to rural communities and help maintain the Irish and European style of farming with its focus on family farms, sustainability, environmental protection and food security.
The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney, TD has also confirmed that every effort continues to be made to clearing the small percentage of remaining cases for payment and that regular payment runs will continue to be made on both schemes on a twice weekly basis.
The news will be particularly welcome this year given the financial difficulties experienced by many farmers especially in the beef sector.
