Government funding to protect and upgrade heritage buildings in Galway and Mayo will safeguard local structures, create jobs and help tourism.
25 projects in Galway and nine projects in Mayo were successfully carried out under The Built Heritage Jobs Leverage Scheme in 2014. Total funding provided to the projects came to just under €300,000 – €57,956 for seven projects in Galway City, €139,000 for 18 projects in County Galway, €103,000 in Mayo.
This conservation work leads to local employment and is a crucial investment in our towns and villages for local people and visiting tourists. Nationally, the scheme generated 175 jobs, and a total of €15 million was invested in 540 projects.
Meanwhile, nine projects in Galway and Mayo have benefited under The Structures at Risk Fund since 2011. This fund allows positive actions to be taken to protect heritage buildings and structures. Our built heritage is an incredibly important asset in terms of tourism and for the pride and enjoyment of local communities.
Since 2011, €128,000 in funding has been allocated for buildings and structures deemed to be at risk in Galway and Mayo. Typical works funded under the scheme include roof and structural repairs and weather-proofing.
By continuing conserving protected structures, we can preserve our built heritage for future generations and boost our attractiveness as a tourist destination, while also contributing to local employment.
