Electricity Supply Disruption on Inis Meain and Inis Oirr

Arising from the loss of electricity affecting Inis Meain and Inis Oirr I have contacted the Minister for Communications, Climate Change and Environment, Denis Naughten and the Secretary General of the Department as well as officials from Roinn na Gaeltachta.
Contact has also been made with the head of ESB Networks. ESB Networks is the State body tasked with maintaining the electricity network and the organisation is under the remit of the Department.
Damage has been caused to the underwater cable. ESB Networks has teams working on the problem but it is now estimated that restoration and repair works will be a number of days.
As minister with responsibility for the islands and as TD for Galway West I have stressed the importance of re-establishing the connection as soon as possible and to urgently examine the possibility of providing electricity-generating capacity in the interim.
I have also spoken with Sean Corrigan of Irish Water who assures me that the water supply is unaffected on Inis Oirr because of the presence of a generator. Irish Water will be transporting a generator to Inis Meain tomorrow for the water supply. However, night time restrictions on usage will be in place.
I will remain in contact with Minister Naughten, the Secretary General and ESB Networks over the weekend.
