Last May, I was delighted to approve funding of €250,000 for the new ‘Seimeastar na Gaeltachta’ initiative operated by NUIG’s ‘Acadamh na hOllscolaíocht’ in Carna in Connemara and in Gaoth Dobhair in Donegal.
Under the programme, College students are given the opportunity to attend a semester in the Gaeltacht. The first group of students concluded their studies last week in Carna and Gaoth Dobhair. I was delighted to meet them and learn of the positive experience of the programme.
Funded by the Department of Culture, Heritage and Gaeltacht and operated by NUIG’s Acadamh, the programme is enabling College students to study for a semester in the Gaeltacht with the immense opportunity to improve their Irish language skills.
In addition, the students stay with local families for the duration of the semester which is a boost to the local community and economy. The positive experiences of the students, the staff of the Acadamh and the local communities’ shows the value of this new initiative which I launched last May.
