Galway’s Farmers to receive Farm Payments earlier than expected
Galway’s farmers will receive their ‘Single Farm Payments’ from 16th October instead of December as previously thought.
Fine Gael Deputy for Galway West, Seán Kyne, strongly welcomed the decision to bring forward the Single Farm Payment which is vitally important for farming families and communities across the county.
The earlier payment follows intense representations made by Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney to the European Commission. The Minister raised the concerns of the farming community at the recent meeting of the Council of Ministers and made a strong case for the payment to be brought forward.
As a result, farmers will now be able to draw down half of their Single Farm Payment from Sunday, 16th October.
Commented Deputy Kyne: “The Single Farm Payment has become increasingly important given the difficulties in access credit owing to the economic and financial crisis. The timing of the Payment is vital in terms of cash-flow and I am fully aware of how essential the Payment is for supplementing farm incomes.
“The Government is committed to supporting our most important indigenous industry and believes farming and agri-business to be key to our country’s economic and jobs recovery.”
