Key health projects for Galway included in HSE’s 2019 Service Plan

The HSE’s Service Plan for 2019 includes a number of key projects that will benefit communities served by Galway University Hospitals. The Service Plan, which has been launched by Minister for Health Simon Harris and the HSE, will guide the investment of €16.05 billion by Government in our health service for 2019, an increase of 5.6% on 2018 funding.

In addition to the significant investment in our acute hospitals of UHG and Merlin Park, in the ambulance service, in primary care, among other services, there are several significant projects will be progressed in Galway this year.

€2.3 million has been provided in the Service Plan for the replacement of the two cardiac cath labs at UHG and for works on the introduction of a third lab. Cath labs, which diagnose heart and circulatory problems, are essential for the provision of timely cardiac care. The labs are all the more important given that cardiovascular disease is one of Ireland’s top three most prevalent chronic illnesses.

Also included in the Service Plan is the development of the new radiotherapy treatment centre for cancer patients at UHG. Part of the second phase of the National Programme for Radiation Oncology, construction of this centre will begin this year and will benefit communities from across the West of Ireland.

In terms of children’s healthcare, this year will see the enhancement of paediatric services in Galway, alongside Cork and Limerick, which will complement the new national children’s hospital under construction in Dublin.

€700,000 has also been allocated for the provision of a new IT room at UHG. IT infrastructure is essential for almost all services but especially for the effective and efficient operation of a complex service such as that provided by an acute hospital. The new IT room will play an important role in the planned new eHealth improvements which include the use of electronic health records, individual health identifiers as well as telehealth services.

Every day thousands of people across Galway and the West receive world class care from dedicated teams of healthcare workers. These new projects, along with the many other elements of the Service Plan, will help ensure that this continues for 2019 and beyond.
