Fine Gael TD for Galway West & Mayo South

Live Register in Galway falls by almost 11% in past 12 months

Minister for Gaeltacht Affairs and Natural Resources and Fine Gael TD for Galway West and Mayo South, Seán Kyne has welcomed the figures from the Central Statistics Office which show that the Live Register in Galway has fallen by almost 11% in the past year.

The figures show that over the last 12 months there are 1,785 fewer persons on the Live Register in Galway.

Commented Minister of State Kyne: “The fall in the Live Register for Galway is very welcome and shows progress by the Government in tackling joblessness and helping people get back to work.

“In Galway we have had several positive developments in recent weeks including expansions by existing companies such as Wood Group and the establishment of new facilities in Galway by companies such as the medical devices company, SMT.

“Nationally, three major milestones have now been passed, with the Live Register falling below 300,000, unemployment falling from its peak of 15% to below 8%, and the number of people employed exceeding two million, all for the first time in eight years.

“Since coming to Government Fine Gael has made significant progress on reducing unemployment. Now we must do more and we will do this through activation measures like: one-to-one engagements with jobseekers; promoting financial supports like JobsPlus and the Wage Subsidy Scheme; reforming existing work schemes like Community Enterprise and Tus; as well as developing initiatives across the whole of Government in education, training, housing and childcare.

“The upcoming Budget will contain more job-friendly measures designed to create jobs and make work pay through sustainable wage increases and effective tax reductions.”
