Minor Works Scheme to benefit every primary school in Galway

Every primary school in Galway will receive funding this month to undertake improvement works under the 2015/2016 Minor Works Grant Scheme.

The €28 million Minor Works Scheme for primary schools has been launched by the Minister for Education, Jan O’Sullivan.

Over 230 schools in Galway city and county will receive the grant by the end of this month for use on improvements to school facilities. Each school will receive a basic grant of €5,500 plus an additional payment of €18.50 for each pupil enrolled and €74 per special needs pupil.

The grant will fund works across a range of categories including improvements to toilet facilities, works on windows, roofing, and other electrical, gas or mechanical works.

The provision of this funding comes after the significant increases in resource teaching hours and special needs assistants in Galway as well as the roll out of a book rental scheme in all schools.

The funding demonstrates the commitment of Fine Gael and Labour in government to responsibly increase spending and investment on public services in a targeted way as the economic position of our country continues to improve.

The Minor Works Scheme is part of a €108 million wider scheme which includes Summer Works Schemes for 2016 and 2017. Applications for the Summer Works Scheme for summer 2016 are now being accepted by the Department of Education.
