Over half a million euro to support Irish Language learners in Ireland and abroad

Over half a million euro to support Irish Language learners in Ireland and abroad

On Wednesday, as Minister for the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands I approved funding of €532,500 for “Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge” (TEG), the Irish language curriculum and evaluation process for learners.

The TEG systems enables learners to become fluent in Irish on a step by step basis and its use has increased in recent years with 1,790 language learners undertaking the TEG exams this year – an increase of 100%.

The TEG curriculum and exams are available across Ireland, including in NUI Galway, and in centres abroad. It is availed of by learners at different levels, from beginners to advanced and applicants include students, such as student teachers, staff in the Public Sector as well as adult learners.

This funding will support the TEG curriculum and exams over the next three academic years. My Department, the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has been funding the TEG for over 10 years.

Available in universities such as NUI Galway and NUI Maynooth, TEG is also used across the world and I’m delighted to hear that the number of students undertaking the TEG exams has doubled this year.

TEG provides not only a formal exam process but also a structure for learners and is helping us to achieve our goal of increasing the number of Irish language speakers both at home and abroad.
