Fine Gael TD for Galway West & Mayo South

Príomhchathair Chultúrtha na hEorpa don bhliain 2020

Mar Aire Stáit sa Roinn Ealaíon, Oidhreachta, Gnóthaí Réigiúnacha, Tuaithe agus Gaeltachta, agus mar TD do Ghaillimh Thiar, ba mhaith liom comhghairdeas ó chroí a dhéanamh le foireann na Gaillimhe 2020.

Is mór an onóir dár gcathair agus dár gcontae a bheith ainmnithe mar Phríomhchathair Chultúrtha na hEorpa don bhliain 2020 agus a bhuíochas sin de bharr obair chrua foirne na Gaillimhe 2020, an pobail agus muintir na Gaillimhe.

Na cruinnithe poiblí, na ceardlanna agus seimineáir, na taispeántais agus féilte, na tionscadail ealaíonta agus cultúrtha –  bhí siad ar fad lárnach i mbaint amach an t-éacht iontach seo.

Mar Aire Stáit na Gaeltachta, cuirim fáilte ar leith roimh rath na Gaillimhe. Tá aitheantas tugtha i gcónaí ag Foireann na Gaillimhe 2020 do luach agus saibhreas an Ghaeilge agus An Ghaeltacht agus is féidir linn a bheith cinnte go mbeidh An Ghaeilge mar chuid lárnach don Príomhchathrach don Chlár Cultúir.

Tá cuid mhaith oibre amach romhainn, ach beidh an leabhar tairiscint chuimsitheach den scoth dar teideal, ‘Making Waves’ (Bruth Faoi Thír) mar threoir iontach chun Gaillimh a ullmhú le bheith ina Phríomhchathair Chultúir na hEorpa i 2020.

As Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, and as TD for Galway West, I would like to warmly congratulate the Galway 2020 team.

It is a huge honour for our city and county to be designated as European Capital of Culture for 2020 and it is thanks to the hard work of the Galway 2020 team, the communities and people of Galway.

The public meetings, the workshops and seminars, the exhibitions and festivals, the artistic and cultural projects – all have been pivotal in securing this wonderful achievement.

As Minister for the Gaeltacht the success of Galway is particularly welcome. The Galway 2020 Team has consistently recognised the value and richness of An Ghaeilge and An Ghaeltacht and we can be assured that An Ghaeilge will be at the heart of the Capital of Culture Programme.

Much work lies ahead but the excellent and comprehensive bid book entitled, ‘Making Waves’ (Bruth Faoi Thír) is a superb guide in preparing Galway to become European Capital of Culture in 2020.
