Public Consultation on new National Islands’ Policy

Recently I launched the public consultation on a new national policy for our off-shore islands with Tánaiste Simon Coveney on Sherkin Island. Meetings and workshops will be held on all of the islands as the views and experiences of islanders are central to the policy and action plan.

Thug mé cuairt ar Oileán Sherkin le déanaí le Simon Coveney cchun próiseas comhchomhairliúcháin phoiblí maidir le beartas náisiúnta do na hoileáin a sheoladh. Reáchtálfar ceardlanna comhairliúcháin le pobail na n-oileán sna seachtainí seo amach romhainn.

This will be the first cross-Government policy developed for the islands in 23 years and will set a roadmap for the long-term sustainability and development of our offshore communities. The voices and views of islanders will be central to the process. Consultation workshops will be held with island communities over the next three months, allowing local groups and individuals to have a direct input as the policy is developed.

Is í seo an chéad uair le 23 mbliain a rinneadh beartas náisiúnta tras-Rialtais a fhorbairt do na hoileáin agus  leagfar amach plean oibre d’inbhuanaitheacht agus d’fhorbairt fhadtéarmach oileáin amach ón gcósta. Beidh smaointe agus dearcadh na n-oileánach ina chuid lárnach den phróiseas. Reáchtálfar ceardlanna comhairliúcháin le pobail na n-oileán sa trí mhí atá romhainn. Tabharfaidh sé seo deis do ghrúpaí áitiúla agus do dhaoine aonair baint dhíreach a bheith acu le forbairt an bheartais fad is atá sé á fhorbairt.

The launch marks the first part of a process which will encompass consultation with both island communities and other stakeholders, input from which will feed into a cross-Government national policy for the sustainable development of the islands.

Over the past 20 years, over €100 million has been invested by the state in capital infrastructure on the islands aimed at implementing the recommendations contained in the last Inter-Departmental Islands Committee.  This new process presents both Government and island communities with an opportunity to take stock of what has been achieved and to develop plans for a sustainable future over the years ahead.

Is é an seoladh seo an chéad chuid den phróiseas ina mbeidh comhairliúchán le pobail na n-oileán agus le páirtithe leasmhara eile i gceist agus bainfear leas as na tuairimí a thiocfaidh chun cinn chun beartas náisiúnta tras-Rialtais a chur i dtoll a chéile maidir le forbairt inbhuanaithe na n-oileán.

Tá os cionn €100 milliún infheistithe ag an Stát i mbonneagar caipitil ar na hoileáin le breis is 20 bliain chun na moltaí a tháinig ón gCoiste Idir-Rannach deiridh maidir le Forbairt Oileán a chur i bhfeidhm.  Tugann an próiseas seo deis don Rialtas agus do phobail na n-oileán machnamh a dhéanamh ar an méid atá bainte amach go dtí seo agus pleananna a fhorbairt sna blianta atá romhainn chun todhchaí inbhuanaithe a bhaint amach.
