Media Statement from Seán Kyne, TD, on recent Telegraph article regarding Connemara and Cloud Computing
The false and fictitious story about Connemara, its Councillors and cloud computing carried by the Telegraph newspaper in Britain, which styles itself as a ‘quality newspaper’, is a sad reflection of how some people continue to hold a negative, clichéd and plainly incorrect view of Ireland.
In truth, there are far more important issues concerning public representatives at local and national level in Ireland than an article attempting but woefully failing to be humorous. What is of concern, however, is how such erroneous irresponsible journalism can travel the world with even the most reputable publications, such as The Washington Post, reporting it.
I suspect the publication of the original Telegraph article is motivated in some way by a mixture of insecurity and jealously.
The real facts are that Ireland is a recognised global leader in the field of Information Technology with almost all the major international companies having a base here. Galway, in particular, is a hub for IT companies who are drawn to the city and county in no small way by the highly-skilled workforce here.
While the Telegraph and elements within it choose to look backwards with a tired, prejudicial and clichéd view of Ireland, we in Connemara, Galway and Ireland will continue to look forward and meet the challenges and grasp the opportunities which exciting IT developments, such as cloud computing, bring.
