Work progressing to resolve issues with orthopaedic surgery at Merlin Park

Officials from the Saolta Hospital Group have confirmed to me that works are underway on repairing the roof of the orthopaedic theatre building and on setting up temporary theatre facilities.

The roof of the existing theatre facility was accidentally damaged during works on the air filtration system.

The tender process to put in new temporary orthopaedic surgery theatre facilities will conclude this Friday.

The Saolta Group has assured me that capacity has been made available at UHG for some elective orthopaedic procedures and that a service agreement is being finalised to facilitate the carrying out of orthopaedic procedures in local, private hospitals.

These actions will help get orthopaedic surgery back in operation at Merlin Park while also helping to work through waiting lists.

I also welcome confirmation from the Saolta Hospital Group that the project for new day services facilities, including orthopaedic and endoscopy services, will shortly be submitted to the HSE’s National Capital Steering Committee.

My submission on the draft National Planning Framework Ireland 2040 Plan includes a call for investment at Merlin Park for non-emergency treatment and chronic illness management which would complement the acute services at UHG.
