Galway City Council is seeking tenders for the design, construction and implementation of the upgrade of the Martin Roundabout, a busy roundabout located on the main Oranmore road into the city, adjacent to the Galway Clinic.
Supported through funding of €2.7 million from the first round of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, the project involves transforming the roundabout into a signalised junction with a new layout that will prioritise buses and include full pedestrian and cycling facilities. The project is also key to the development of new homes at Ardaun.
The Council is tendering for the detailed design and construction phases of the project with design services including signalised junction design, signage, public lighting, flood risk and civil engineering including bus, cycle and road design being sought.
This is one of the key routes into the city and caters for commuters and different types of transport from Oranmore, Clarinbridge and the south of the county. It is very welcome to see a focus being placed on making this junction more public transport and cycling friendly.
With the impact of Covid-19 the speedier development of different transport types to allow for social distancing is more important than ever. I look forward to a contractor being appointed to this project which is in keeping with the Galway Transport Strategy.
