Funding of €2.68 million for Active Travel Measures across Galway County is in addition to €3 million allocation earlier this month for Galway City.
Funding of €3.68 million has been allocated to Galway County Council for Active Travel and Climate Change Adaptation measures.
The funding comprises two parts – €2.68 million for Active Travel measures across Galway County and €1 million for Climate Change Adaptation measures across the county.
The Active Travel Grant Scheme provides funding for a varied range of projects to improve walking and cycling infrastructure. The projects in Galway include the provision of new footpaths, refurbishment and reconstruction of footpaths, provision of road safety features such as new crossings, signage and markings at locations including schools and playgrounds. Funding is also included for the provision of cycleways.
There is a particular emphasis on improving access and connections with village and town centres.
Over 40 projects are being funded across Galway including in communities such as Athenry, Ballinasloe, Cill Chiaráin, Clonbur, Lackagh, Loughrea, Oranmore, Ros Muc, among others.

Meanwhile, a further €1 million has been allocated to Galway City and County Councils for Climate Change Adaptation measures. The funding will progress 23 projects in communities to repair damage caused to infrastructure by storms and flooding or to install measures to help prevent future damage.
Projects include works to provide or improve drainage, re-surface roads or paths, raise road levels and provide coastal defences, among others.
