Funding of €5.68 million has been allocated for transport infrastructure in Galway. The funding comprises €3 million to Galway City Council from the National Transport Authority and €2.68 million from the Department of Transport for Active Travel measures across Galway County.
The Active Travel Grant Scheme provides funding for a varied range of projects to improve walking and cycling infrastructure.
The projects in Galway include the provision of new footpaths, refurbishment and reconstruction of footpaths, provision of road safety features such as new crossings, signage and markings at locations including schools and playgrounds. Funding is also included for the provision of cycleways including improvements along former national routes.
There is a particular emphasis on improving access and connections with village and town centres.
Twenty-one projects are located in the city including a number of projects that will see improvements at various locations in the city.
Over 40 projects are being funded across Galway County including in communities such as Athenry, Ballinasloe, Cill Chiaráin, Clonbur, Lackagh, Loughrea, Oranmore, Ros Muc, among others.
