Council already securing new cyclist safety signs for busy route
The N59 Glenlo Abbey to Killeen upgrade project will be submitted for approval by An Bord Pleanála before the end of the year.
Galway County Council is also securing new cyclist safety signs for this busy stretch of the N59 ahead of the re-alignment of approximately 900 metres of the main Galway to Clifden road between Glenlo Abbey Hotel and Killeen.
Due to the proximity of this part of the road to Lough Corrib Special Area of Conservation, the project will require approval from An Bord Pleanála.
The upgrade of this stretch of the N59 will improve safety for all road users and especially cyclists. The installation of suitable cyclist safety signs will help remind motorists of the need to observe an appropriate passing distance – at least 1.5 metres on roads of this type – when overtaking cyclists.
While the design of the upgrade of the road, which will remove a number of dangerous bends and widen the route, is complete, the Council has to prepare a number of reports for approval by An Bord Pleanála. These include an Environmental Impact Assessment Report and a Natura Impact Statement.
I understand from Council engineers that it is anticipated that these documents will be submitted to the board for approval by the end of the year which will pave the way for this important upgrade project to proceed.
